CAS is the centre of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme's goal of educating the "whole person".
The field trips offered by India Educational Tours will help the student realize that each person can learn from the person they help, and will enable the student to embark on a journey of discovery through which the student seeks to find their own place in the world. This can then help the student develop attitude traits such as determination, commitment, initiative and empathy. These experiences that students go through help them grow in the "knowledge of life, themselves and others." These traits will help them transcend educational, cultural and socio-economic barriers and make them more effective and motivated in the work that they do now and in the future.
However, the success or failure of CAS depends heavily on the commitment of all members of the school community. The responsibility of CAS cannot be left to the students: they need strong adult leadership and guidance, which must come from the staff and other adults in the community. Such a program needs dedicated, caring individuals and school leaders willing to put in time, money, expertise, and personnel, to make such initiatives meaningful and long-term. The school must remain sensitive to the cultural, social and economic diversity of its student body and the community the school is set in. As the IBO says, "just proof of time spent on CAS is not sufficient". What the students do, and what they learn from the experience, must make a tangible difference to both the helper and the helped.
The IBO follows the two great traditions - the Sciences and the Humanities. The programme is geared to develop a student with an "informed heart" which should be an integral part of a student's international education. All students should be given the opportunity to interact with his/her community and be more involved with the world around them The CAS programme provides them that opportunity.
